Social Media Companies Agree To Third Congressional Hearing

This is another article that makes me “eehhhhh” as I read it. Except this time it’s not how the author/article states things but more of what it’s talking about. Social media companies are doing pretty much everything the U.S. government asks of them and yet the companies are still being investigated. Innocent until proven guilty right? Last time I checked, I haven’t heard of anything the companies are guilty of, so why make them change the way they do things altogether? Based on the article, Facebook already showed senators tons of ads and didn’t find anything really to be guilty of...

Social Media And The Brain

While reading this article, it did caused me to hesitate and re-look at some of its statements. One of the "facts" (I'll explain the air quotes after) includes Instagram and Snapchat are the two worst social media platforms for those with mental illnesses. I wasn't so sure about this because I too am one of those people and I don't have the problems that this article talks about with the platforms. That's why I put quotations around fact because it seems just a little opinionated to my eyes. Don't get me wrong, the evidence it provides is true itself, but like I said the statement doesn't seem like a FACT to me. If you don't understand, let me put it this way: when people going through rehab see something that taunts them to do that one thing they're trying to get away from, that person has or could not have the power to look away. My point being it's not ENTIRELY the platform's fault.

New York Times Tightens Social Media Policies

I can understand a news company’s concern about their reporters’ presence on social media, but I don’t think they should be more strict on their policies than they already are. Editing and reviewing their posts is necessary, in my opinion, to make sure the employees don’t cross any lines. That should be it though. How can they get more strict than that? What if the messages that would have been posted had something relatable to a lot of people? There goes 100+ followers for your company. As much as Myself and others don’t want it to happen, companies will eventually deny employees certain ideas.

We Are All Angry On Social Media, At Least Listen

I am somewhat mesmerized by how truthful this article is, it says everything I’ve noticed about social media. Negativity after negativity is 90% of what I see on social media platforms, which is why I only follow people that support others in a positive way so I don’t get sucked into that kind of world. If you don’t know what I mean by that, GOOD! When someone looks at hate filled posts and comments, they tend to stick around those kind of things. That will eventually turn into posting and commenting negativity themselves, which is what I mean by that world. This makes me wonder, would companies and businesses use hatred to attract customers? (I mean in a bad way because those anti-cigarette ads got it right)

Teens Rebel Against Social Media

This article was very interesting to me. I didn’t like it, but I didn’t not like it either. This proves that social media isn’t always a bad thing. The article talks about how a lot of teenagers said they wouldn’t mind if social media never existed, I am not one of those kids. It’s not that I’m addicted to social media, I use it for academic reasons and socializing for the main part. I don’t have a lot of friends that I would hang out with after school every other day, I don’t even hang out with friends that much on a regular basis. It’s not that I’m anti-social either, I just don’t have time and my parents don’t want me to be that kind of teenager that goes out with friends once or twice a week. So yes, I use social media to talk to friends from school and apps like School Loop to check on my grades and upcoming assignments. It all depends on how the person themselves use it, but this doesn’t take away from the fact that social media is becoming more and more important as it progresses.

Regulating Social Media

For me, the article from The Hill makes me think and want to argue with the author about their opinions on regulating social media. It talks about how the platforms should be regulated and monitored like news websites and regular medias are. The problem with that is that social media is used by so many people around the world, so would it even be possible to regulate something so widely used? That’s like asking a country to control their food intake for their population. You can’t do that, you can’t tell people to do something that they think they can’t live a day without. I don’t think it’s necessarily the company’s fault with the way their platforms are being used, it is the people using them. As hard as you will try, sometimes you just can’t change the way a person speaks or acts. Looks like social media platforms have a long road ahead of them.
